What is Corian?

More than 40 years ago, DuPont discovered an advanced method for blending natural minerals with pure acrylic resin to create an ideal surface for living. That’s how the original solid surface material for Corian® countertops was discovered. Warm and smooth to the touch, this solid surface has been unmatched in quality and versatility ever since. DuPont Corian is the “solid surface” countertop, Made from a durable nonporous acrylic polymer, Corian comes in palette of colors, allowing you unlimited design options. Corian resists stains, scratches, sunlight and heat.

Appearance

  • Corian® countertops offer
  • The color and pattern is consistent throughout, and cannot wear away
  • Solid beauty. Should your countertop get scratched or damaged, there is plenty of renewable luster just beneath the surface
  • Corian® can be cut or seamed to any size or shape.
  • Your new countertop can be integrated seamlessly with a Corian® sink.
  • A patterned Corian® backsplash will coordinate beautifully with your countertop.

Cleanliness

Corian® countertops are easy to clean with no visible seams to trap dirt or grime.
Resists stains since liquids cannot penetrate and leave their permanent mark on your kitchen counter. Wood and natural stone surfaces such as granite are porous by nature.

Because of its non-porous surface, bacteria and mold have no place to grow.

Longevity

  • Corian® is resistant to impact damage.
  • Accidental nicks and scratches can simply be removed with ordinary abrasive cleaner or sandpaper.
  • Unaffected by humidity, whereas a wood based countertop would warp with humidity.
  • Reputable. 98% of Corian® owners say they would buy it again.
  • Permanent. Designed to withstand a lifetime of use.
  • Corian® is timelessly fashionable and luxurious, endued with subtle elegance.

Surprisingly Durable

Corian’s engineered natural mineral and acrylic resin blended surface resists impacts and minor scratches. When slight damage occurs, you can usually repair it with tools or with fine sandpaper, Scotch-Brite pad or an abrasive cleaner. The surface is also non-porous and resistant to stains from food and beverages and doesn’t fade with time or light exposure. Unlike porous wood or natural stone countertops, Corian countertops don’t promote the growth of mildew, mold or bacteria, and they’re easy-to-clean with simple soap and warm water and most commercial countertop cleaners.

Easily Customizable

Another reason that Cally designers continues to recommend Corian countertops is that DuPont offers more than a hundred color and pattern options and designed Corian for quick, easy customization. Cally designers can cut Corian to any size or shape to match your unique design needs and can fit together Corian pieces in ways that create a seamless look. Cally designers can also integrate a Corian sink or backsplash into the countertop without it clashing or looking out of place. DuPont also manufactures translucent Corian that when combined with lighting glows from within.

Ecologically Sound

Corian also stems from a desire to protect people and the environment. Corian meets health guidelines for emitting low levels of volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). DuPont manufacturing waste also doesn’t impact landfills. In January, DuPont successfully eliminated landfill waste at all its manufacturing sites. Instead of 81 million pounds of waste per annum, DuPont reuses all materials in other products such as concrete, road sub-base, landscaping and other Corian products such as the Terra Collection.

98% of those who own Corian countertops surveyed state that they would repurchase Corian for other remodeling projects. Does any doubt exist as to the reason? Corian is perfect for any countertop project no matter the room décor or the level of expected usage
.

In our experience, Corian® is one of those “sleeper” countertop selections. It never seems to get ahead of the glitz and glamor of natural stone or quartz countertops in online sources, yet it continues to be one of our best-sellers. More

  • Those points make it a popular contender for reasonably-priced, low-maintenance countertops.
  • Here are some of the reasons Corian® is still a viable option for contemporary kitchen designs.

It’s Popular

If kitchen trends are important to you, you’ll be happy to know that Corian® is still considered one of the most popular solid-surface countertop option They have their pulse on America’s remodeling tastes, choices and trends so that statement is backed by bona-fide data culled from thousands of kitchen designers across the country.

It’s Versatile

There are two ways Corian® can be considered a versatile option. First, there are so many colors and patterns that there is a style for every design taste. It looks as at home in a Modern kitchen as it does in a sleek modern design, adjacent to stainless steel appliances. There’s a Corian® option for every style.

Second, it’s versatile in terms of cooking and baking. Chefs like it because you can move a pot or pan directly from the cooktop or oven to the countertop without requiring a hot pad. Bakers enjoy the fact that dough can be mixed and rolled right on the surface.

It’s Durable

Perhaps one of Corian’s greatest selling points is unrivaled durability – there are equals, but no betters. It is super hard and almost impervious to cracking or chipping (we’d like to say it IS impervious but we have a feeling that the right slam on a corner from a sledge hammer may do noticeable damage). While it can “scratch,” it’s nothing compared to a scratch in a granite or marble countertop. Rather, you grab a sponge and some Bar Keeper’s Friend, give it a little love, and scratches disappear.

It’s a Good Investment

Return on investment is something to consider as well. Corian as one of the best choices for getting a good return on your investment. not only in terms of resale value, but also long-term and longevity.

Little bit of History

Acrylic Solid Surface – Solid surfacing material Acrylic polymer and Alumina trihydrate Corian is the brand name for a solid surface material created by E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (DuPont). Its primary use is as a countertop/benchtop surface, though it has many other applications. It is composed of acrylic polymer and alumina trihydrate, a material derived from bauxite ore. Corian is the original material of this type, created by DuPont scientists in 1967.A number of direct solid surface competitors to Corian have emerged since the expiration of DuPont’s patent on solid surfaces.

Installations come with a 10-year warranty covering both product and installation, for interior residential applications.

Corian® sheets may vary according to the thickness of the material (4 mm, 6 mm, 12 mm or 19 mm), its aesthetics and surface finish.

Corian is manufactured in three thicknesses: 6 millimetres (0.24 in), 12 millimetres (0.47 in), and 19 millimetres (0.75 in). Most Corian is manufactured at a DuPont facility near Buffalo, New York. Cross-section cuts show consistent color and particulate patterning evenly distributed throughout the material, giving rise to the category name “Solid Surface.”
